New York Pharmacists Can Dispense Hormonal Contraception Without a Prescription

New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed an order yesterday allowing New York pharmacists to dispense hormonal contraception without a prescription, and in doing so, New York joins at least 28 other states that have expanded pharmacists’ ability to prescribe and dispense hormonal contraception.

Under Governor Hochul’s new order, New York pharmacists are able to dispense up to 12 months worth of self-administered hormonal contraceptives, which include an oral pill, a vaginal ring, or a contraceptive patch.

Prior to dispensing any contraceptives, patients must fill out a self-screening intake form, which is then reviewed by New York pharmacists to make sure the hormonal contraceptive medication is appropriate. If appropriate, New York pharmacists must then provide patients with counseling and education on any potential risks associated with the contraception medication.

New York’s order further expands pharmacists roll as part of the healthcare team.
